How Small Shifts Can Create Big Breakthroughs
- Focus
Healing is not always a straight line. Some seasons feel alive with growth, clarity, and momentum. Others feel heavy, stagnant, or stuck. You might be showing up, reading, praying, even doing “all the right things,” yet feel like nothing is changing. If you’ve ever felt emotionally frozen, you are not alone. Feeling stuck does not mean you are broken. It means something inside you is asking to be noticed, nurtured, and shifted.
Here are seven signs you might be emotionally stuck, along with practical steps to begin moving forward again.
Physical tiredness is normal, but emotional exhaustion is different. If you wake up weary, struggle to find energy, or feel heavy without a clear reason, it may signal emotional stagnation. Often this happens because you are carrying unprocessed emotions that weigh more than your body can handle.
How to Move Forward: Start with presence. Instead of pushing past your fatigue, ask: “What am I carrying that I have not given language to?” Journaling for five minutes each morning can help you identify hidden burdens. Pair this with a short practice of breathwork or prayer to release what no longer serves you.
Do you notice yourself scrolling endlessly, binge-watching shows, or snacking mindlessly? Numbing is a common way we avoid uncomfortable emotions. While it offers temporary relief, it also prevents you from processing what your heart needs to heal.
How to Move Forward: Pause before reaching for distraction. Ask yourself: “What am I avoiding right now?” Then give yourself permission to feel without judgment. Even setting a timer for two minutes to sit with your feelings can help you reconnect and release.

When you find yourself snapping at loved ones, crying over small frustrations, or feeling intense anger out of proportion to the situation, your emotional system may be signaling unresolved pain. Triggers often show us where we are stuck.
How to Move Forward: Practice naming your emotions in the moment. Instead of saying, “I’m just mad,” get more specific. “I feel disappointed,” or “I feel afraid.” Naming disarms shame and helps you respond instead of react. Pair this with prayer, asking God to show you what lies beneath the surface.
On the other end of the spectrum, some people do not overreact—they underreact. Nothing feels exciting. Joy feels far away. You might feel like you are watching life happen rather than living it. Emotional numbness is often a protective mechanism, but it can also keep you from experiencing connection.
How to Move Forward: Begin with micro-moments of connection. Step outside and notice the sunlight. Listen to one favorite song. Call a safe friend. Numbness does not lift overnight, but consistent small moments of connection can thaw what feels frozen.
Busyness can disguise stagnation. If your calendar is full but your heart feels empty, you may be stuck in performance rather than presence. You may be moving a lot but not moving forward.
How to Move Forward: Create intentional pauses in your day. Even three minutes of silence between tasks can help reset your nervous system and allow your spirit to catch up with your schedule. Ask yourself: “Am I doing this to connect, or am I doing this to avoid?”
When you are emotionally stuck, your mind often replays the same conversation, wound, or mistake. Rumination can trick you into thinking you are processing, but often it just reinforces the pain.
How to Move Forward: When you notice your mind replaying, pause and invite truth into the loop. Ask: “What does God say about this?” Write down one scripture or affirmation to replace the repeated story. For example, instead of “I failed,” replace it with “I am still becoming.” Speaking new words interrupts old cycles.
Indecision is often a sign of fear or self-doubt rooted in old wounds. If you delay choices, wait for others to decide for you, or feel paralyzed by small decisions, you may be stuck in a cycle of mistrust with yourself.
How to Move Forward: Start with small, low-risk decisions. Choose your meal, your route home, or your evening activity intentionally. Celebrate each choice you make. Over time, you rebuild trust in your ability to decide. Pair this with prayer, asking God to align your decisions with His peace.
Healing is not about doing everything at once. It is about taking small, consistent steps. Here are simple practices you can try this week:
Feeling stuck is not failure. It is feedback. It is your soul saying, “Pay attention here.” Every moment of stagnation can become a doorway to growth if you choose to respond with curiosity and compassion rather than shame.
You do not have to do it all today. Start small. Take one gentle step. Invite God into the places that feel frozen. He is not disappointed in your slowness. He is patient in your process.
Remember this: being stuck is not the end of your story. It is an invitation to shift, to move, and to rediscover the momentum that comes from living aligned with truth.

What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
