Healing in a World of Division
- Faith
Emotions are powerful. They color our world, shape our relationships, and influence our choices. When we feel joy, life feels light and hopeful. When sadness or anger rises, it can feel like the ground beneath us is shaking. God gave us emotions as a gift, but He never meant for them to rule us.
Living by faith does not mean ignoring your feelings. It means acknowledging them, respecting them, and then choosing to let truth have the final say. Faith is the anchor that holds you steady when emotions run high.
Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable. Emotions respond to circumstances, to memories, to hormones, to fatigue. Sometimes they tell us the truth about what needs healing. Other times they distort reality and keep us trapped in fear or shame.
Think of the disciples in the boat during the storm (Mark 4:35–41). Their fear was real. The waves were crashing. But the truth was that Jesus was in the boat with them. Their feelings said they were going to drown. Faith said they were safe.
That is the difference between living led by feelings and living anchored in faith. Feelings shift with the wind. Faith holds steady through the storm.
Choosing faith over feelings is not about dismissing your emotions. It is about letting truth interpret them instead of letting them define you. It is about saying:
When you let faith take the lead, your emotions no longer dictate your direction. They become signals to pay attention to, but they do not become steering wheels.

Here are practical ways to live by faith when emotions feel overwhelming:
I have lived through seasons where my emotions felt louder than anything else. Times when fear told me I was not safe, when grief told me I would never recover, when shame told me I did not belong.
In those seasons, it would have been easy to let feelings take the driver’s seat. But every time I chose to open Scripture, every time I whispered a prayer through tears, every time I remembered that faith is steadier than feelings, I found peace.
Faith did not erase the feelings, but it re-ordered them. It placed them under the covering of truth.
Not all feelings are enemies. Sometimes emotions reveal what is going on beneath the surface. Anxiety might reveal where you are relying on yourself instead of God. Anger might reveal a place where injustice needs to be addressed. Sadness might reveal an area of loss that needs comfort.
Faith over feelings does not mean ignoring these signals. It means bringing them into God’s presence and asking, “What do You want me to see here?”
Emotions can change in a matter of minutes, but faith is about the long view. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Faith is not swayed by today’s mood. It is anchored in God’s unchanging nature. When you live by faith, you are saying, “I believe God’s promises more than I believe my fear.” You are choosing a perspective that holds even when your feelings pull in another direction.
If you are in a season where your emotions feel overwhelming, you are not alone. You do not have to suppress them, and you do not have to let them control you. Start small.
Over time, these small practices create a rhythm. They teach your soul to recognize the voice of truth over the noise of emotion.
Your emotions matter. They are part of what makes you human, tender, and alive. But they are not the foundation of your life. Faith is.
Let your emotions point you to God, but let faith anchor you in Him. When fear rises, let faith remind you that you are safe. When sadness feels heavy, let faith remind you that joy comes in the morning. When shame whispers lies, let faith remind you that you are loved and forgiven.
You do not have to be ruled by how you feel. You can be guided by what you know to be true. Faith over feelings is not ignoring your emotions. It is choosing to believe that God’s Word, God’s presence, and God’s promises are stronger than any storm inside of you.
Stay grounded. Stay centered. Stay rooted in truth.

What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
