Healing in a World of Division
- Faith
For so many years, I thought life was supposed to be hard. Not just challenging in the natural ups and downs, but a constant grind. I wore hustle like armor. I equated striving with strength. If something wasn’t difficult, I assumed I wasn’t doing enough.
But over time, the hard edges began to crack me. The hustle left me weary. The endless cycle of doing and proving didn’t give me peace, it stole it. What I’ve learned, slowly and often the hard way, is that God never designed life to be lived in perpetual hardness.
Life is not against us. Life is designed for us. And the journey of becoming FORMED often begins when we learn to soften.
We live in a culture that applauds exhaustion. The more we push, the more we perform, the more we hustle, the more worthy we believe we are. For a while, I thought this was the only way to live.
But here’s what striving really does:
That kind of life is hard, not holy. Hardness is not the same as strength.
When I first started to soften, I worried I was becoming weak. Softness felt like surrender, and surrender felt like failure. But as I leaned into God’s design, I discovered something profound: softness is not weakness. It is strength aligned with truth.
Softness is the courage to let down walls.
Softness is the wisdom to rest when the world tells you to grind.
Softness is the faith to believe that God’s design includes your flourishing, not just your survival.
When Jesus said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30), He wasn’t describing a life without responsibility. He was inviting us into a life where the weight doesn’t crush us, because we’re not carrying it alone.
The language of being FORMED is about more than habit change or mindset shifts. It’s about alignment with the way life was always intended to flow. We are not here to live brittle, hard, self-protective lives. We are here to be shaped, softened, and strengthened in God’s design, not by accident.
Being FORMED looks like:
This process moves us from hard edges, to soft hearts, to a life fully formed by design, not by chance.

Here are a few steps I practice and teach when guiding people out of hardness and into flow:
If you’re stuck in striving mode today, try this:
Here’s the truth I keep coming back to: life is not something to conquer. It is something to be formed by. When we shift from hardness to softness, we discover a strength that doesn’t depend on hustle. We begin to trust that God’s design is not against us, but for us.
Healing often begins when the hustle stops. Transformation begins when striving gives way to surrender. And peace begins when we finally understand that the design of life is for us, not against us.
So if you’ve been living hard, carrying heavy, and proving constantly, maybe it’s time to soften. Maybe it’s time to let yourself be formed.

What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
