Healing in a World of Division
- Faith
I used to think my only options were to either handle everything or to completely give up. On one side was the endless pressure to manage every detail: my family, my work, my health, and even my spiritual growth. On the other side was the call to surrender, which at times felt like letting go of all responsibility. I lived in the tension between these two extremes, always unsure if I was doing too much or not enough.
Maybe you know this place too. You carry so much on your shoulders, yet deep inside you long for the peace that only comes when you let go. The real challenge is learning how to live with both intention and surrender, without falling into control on one side or passivity on the other.
We often treat control like a shield. If I can manage all the moving parts, maybe I can keep myself and the people I love safe. Control promises certainty, but it actually breeds anxiety. The harder we grip, the heavier life feels.
I’ve learned that control is often rooted in fear. Fear of failure. Fear of loss. Fear of not being enough. And fear convinces us that if we can just handle life perfectly, nothing will fall apart. The truth is, God never designed us to carry life that way.
Surrender is not about doing nothing. It is not weakness or laziness. Surrender is a posture of trust. It is opening our hands to God’s design while still showing up for our part.
When I surrender, I stop trying to write the ending of every story. I release the outcomes that were never mine to control. I trust that even in uncertainty, God’s design is at work. Surrender is not a one-time choice. It is a daily practice of letting go where my effort ends and His grace begins.
Life asks for effort. Healing asks for surrender. The art of living well is learning how to hold both.
When these two move together, life becomes lighter. We live responsibly but not anxiously. We learn to give our best without believing it all rests on us.

Here are practical ways I return to balance when I feel pulled too far toward control or too far toward passivity:
When the weight of life feels heavy, try this:
Effort without surrender is exhausting. Surrender without effort is incomplete. True peace is found when we live in the balance of both.
When we learn to handle what is ours while entrusting the rest to God, we live with integrity, clarity, and calm. We discover that life was never meant to be carried alone.
Peace comes when life meets surrender.
I’m Kelsey. For decades I’ve walked alongside women through chronic pain, burnout, motherhood, faith shifts, and the complicated in-between seasons of life.
What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
