Healing in a World of Division
- Faith
When God created man, He breathed life into him. That breath was holy, and it still is. We breathe not only to stay alive, but also to return to presence, to come back to the body, to the moment, and ultimately, back to God.
Breath is not just biology. It is spiritual. It grounds us in what is true. It softens what is tense. It invites peace when anxiety rises. And it can restore connection when we feel far from God, far from our purpose, or far from ourselves.
Over the years, I have used breathwork not just for calming down, but for coming closer to God. It is one of the most underused tools in the spiritual life, and yet it is available to all of us, all the time.
One of the most powerful ways I teach breathwork is through breath prayer, combining intentional breathing with the truth of Scripture. Here is a simple example using Isaiah 26:3:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Turn it into a breath pattern: inhale “You will keep in perfect peace…” and exhale “…those whose minds are steadfast.”
Breathe in again. Exhale slowly. Let the rhythm of God’s Word wash over your nervous system. Let it sink in beyond your mind and allow your body to feel the peace you are speaking.
Repeat the verse slowly, again and again. Feel where the words resonate. Then ask: Where is my mind distracted? Where am I carrying anxiety? What am I grasping that I need to surrender?
This is not just about calming down. It is about anchoring your mind in truth. It is about forming a spiritual practice that helps you become more emotionally grounded and spiritually aligned.
You can use this method with any Scripture. Choose a verse that speaks to your heart. Break it into two phrases. Inhale truth. Exhale trust. Let the verse move from your lips to your lungs, from your lungs into your heart.
This kind of breathwork becomes a daily rhythm. You can do it while folding laundry, sitting in the car, lying in bed, or walking outside. There is no ritual required. No perfect posture. Just your presence.
As you breathe, you are not just regulating your nervous system. You are regulating your soul. You are saying, I trust You. I remember You. I receive Your peace.
Breath becomes your prayer. Stillness becomes your sanctuary. And peace becomes your portion.
If you are just beginning your journey with breathwork, start simple. Try five minutes each morning. Pick a verse. Use it as your inhale and exhale pattern. Breathe with it. Sit with it. Let it reframe your mind.
I have seen breathwork transform people in moments of crisis. One woman I worked with was going through a high-conflict divorce and felt like she was unraveling emotionally. We did not start with coaching or journaling. We just started breathing. I gave her Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
We practiced together: inhale “The Lord is close…” and exhale “…to the brokenhearted.” That became her daily lifeline. Over time, her nervous system calmed, her outlook shifted, and she began to feel steady in the storm.
So no, breathwork is not just a trendy wellness practice. It is an ancient tool of spiritual restoration. It connects you to truth. It connects you to peace. It connects you back to the presence of God.
As you breathe today, remember: this is holy work. This is heart work. And this is how you create space for the Spirit to move.
Inhale what is holy. Exhale what no longer serves. Settle into the moment. Settle into His presence.
This is peace. This is prayer. This is the power of breathwork.
Breathe deeper. God is in the breath.

What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
