Truth vs. Trauma: Who Are You Listening To?

When pain speaks, it can be loud. Trauma carries a voice that whispers lies about who you are, where you stand, and whether you are safe. It is a voice shaped by past experiences that tries to convince you the future will be the same. Trauma says, “You are unsafe. You are alone. You are unworthy.”

But there is another voice. The voice of truth. God’s truth has been steady since the beginning of time. It is not shaken by circumstances or past wounds. Truth says, “You are safe in Me. You are seen. You are loved.”

The question is not whether voices will rise inside you, because they will. The real question is, who are you listening to?

The Voice of Trauma

Trauma is not just the event that happened. It is also the story that gets stored in your body and your mind. When life feels uncertain or a trigger rises, the voice of trauma often shows up first. It may say:

  • “You are not safe here.”
  • “People will always leave.”
  • “You are too much.”
  • “You are not enough.”
  • “This will never get better.”

These statements feel convincing because they were written during real moments of pain. Your body remembered the fear. Your mind tried to make sense of the chaos. But while trauma’s voice may sound familiar, it does not tell the whole truth.

The Voice of Truth

Truth sounds different. Truth is rooted in God’s Word, in His promises, and in His character. Truth brings clarity where trauma brings confusion. Truth says:

  • “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
  • “You are fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).
  • “You are chosen, holy, and dearly loved” (Colossians 3:12).
  • “Perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18).
  • “I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah 43:19).

Truth does not always shout. Often it comes as a steady whisper. A peace that makes no sense. A reminder that God is still present even when feelings say otherwise.

Learning to Discern the Difference

How do you tell the difference between the voice of trauma and the voice of truth? Here are five practical steps you can take when the noise rises:

  1. Pause and identify the voice. Ask yourself, “Does this thought sound like fear, shame, or despair, or does it sound like peace, love, and hope?”
  2. Check it against Scripture. God will never speak condemnation or hopelessness over you. If the voice does not align with His Word, it is not truth.
  3. Notice how it makes you feel. Trauma leaves you heavy, anxious, or shut down. Truth may challenge you, but it will also bring lightness, clarity, or reassurance.
  4. Replace lies with truth. Write down the exact lie you are hearing and then write a verse or affirmation that speaks God’s truth in its place.
  5. Practice daily reminders. Keep Scripture visible. Speak truth out loud. Train your heart and mind to recognize God’s steady voice more quickly.

The Power of Choice

You cannot always control when trauma’s voice rises, but you can choose who gets the final word. Each time you pause, discern, and anchor yourself in truth, you weaken trauma’s grip. Over time, the volume of lies decreases, and the steady voice of truth becomes easier to hear.

It is a process. It takes patience and practice. But the more you lean into truth, the more you begin to live from it. And living from truth brings freedom.

Closing Thought

You will always face two voices. One rooted in fear, one rooted in faith. One shaped by past pain, one secured in eternal promises.

When those voices rise, pause. Breathe. Ask yourself, “Who is speaking, and who do I choose to believe?”

Let the voice of truth have the final word.
