Healing in a World of Division

The word “surrender” used to intimidate me. I pictured it as giving up all control, like waving a white flag in battle. For years I thought surrender meant losing my voice, my choices, or my identity. No wonder it felt scary.
But over time, I’ve discovered that surrender in God’s hands looks different. It is not about becoming passive or powerless. It is about becoming aligned with His wisdom instead of weighed down by my striving. Surrender is not the end of freedom but the beginning of it.
Most of us are taught that control equals safety. If I can manage the schedules, organize the budget, anticipate the problems, then I won’t get blindsided. Control feels like protection.
But spiritually, clinging to control is exhausting. It puts all the weight of life on our shoulders, when we were never meant to carry it all. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Surrender is the way into that rest.
The difficulty is that surrender asks us to trust what we cannot see. It asks us to believe that God’s plan is better than ours, even when His timing makes no sense.

Surrender is not about abandoning responsibility. I still cook meals, pay bills, and show up for the people I love. Surrender is about posture. It is the choice to live open-handed rather than clenched-fist.
When I surrender, I invite God into the everyday decisions. I stop assuming I know best. I pause to ask, “Lord, what would honor You here?” I remind myself that my value does not come from managing outcomes but from being His child.
Surrender is strength, because it moves the weight from my shoulders to His.
Here are some ways surrender can become a lived practice instead of a lofty idea:
When I became a mother, surrender was no longer optional. I could not control my child’s sleep patterns, health, or emotions. I tried at first, but all it did was exhaust me. I remember one night standing at the crib, whispering, “Lord, I can’t do this. I release this child into Your care.”
That prayer became my anchor. It didn’t remove the challenges, but it freed me from believing I had to control them all. That night began a shift for me — learning that surrender is not failure, it is faith.
If surrender feels terrifying, know this: you are not losing yourself. You are aligning yourself with the One who loves you and knows what you cannot see. Living open-handed is where real strength begins.

What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
