How to Support Your Young Adult Without Overstepping
- Family
Busyness is one of the greatest threats to love. I do not mean the kind of full life that comes from purpose and family rhythms. I mean the kind of busyness that leaves us stretched too thin, rushing from one responsibility to the next, and giving our spouse only the leftovers of our time and energy. Every marriage will walk through seasons like this. New jobs, young children, caring for aging parents, or simply the demands of life can make it feel like there is no space left for intentional connection.
I know this season well. There have been weeks when my husband and I barely looked each other in the eye, except to coordinate schedules or discuss practical needs. It was not that we lacked love. It was that love was getting buried under the weight of busy. What we learned is that habits matter more in these seasons than ever. Small daily practices can keep love strong, even when life feels full.
Habits are the quiet builders of intimacy. They are the rhythms that, repeated day after day, create a foundation of trust, care, and affection. Big romantic gestures are beautiful, but it is the daily choices that truly sustain a marriage.
Think of habits as the stitches that hold the fabric of your relationship together. Each habit may feel small, but together they form something strong and lasting. When busyness rises, habits protect love from being forgotten.
Busyness is not just a schedule problem. It is a heart problem when left unchecked. When we run from one task to another without pause, we often begin to see our spouse more as a partner in logistics than as the person we fell in love with.
The cost of busyness includes:
The good news is that busyness does not have to erode love. With simple habits, we can keep connection alive even in the busiest seasons.

These habits do not require hours of time. They simply require intention.
Habits without faith can feel mechanical. Habits with faith become holy. Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 16:14: “Do everything in love.” When we anchor our habits in love, even the smallest actions carry spiritual weight.
Praying together, even for a minute, invites God into the heart of the marriage. Offering forgiveness reflects Christ’s forgiveness of us. Choosing kindness in tone reflects the fruit of the Spirit. Habits, when paired with faith, become not just practices of connection but practices of worship.
Not every habit looks the same in every season. What matters is choosing habits that fit the moment.
Adjusting habits to fit the season makes them sustainable.
When busyness feels overwhelming, pause together. Sit quietly, hold hands, and breathe in sync. Inhale: “God, center us.” Exhale: “God, unite us.” One minute of shared stillness can shift the atmosphere.
If your marriage feels stretched thin by busy schedules, know that love is not lost. Love simply needs to be tended. Habits may seem small, but they carry the power to rebuild connection and keep intimacy alive.
Love does not disappear when life gets busy. It simply waits to be nurtured. By choosing daily habits rooted in love and faith, you can keep your marriage strong, resilient, and joy-filled even in the busiest seasons.
Love grows through daily habits.
I’m Kelsey. For decades I’ve walked alongside women through chronic pain, burnout, motherhood, faith shifts, and the complicated in-between seasons of life.
What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
