How to Support Your Young Adult Without Overstepping

Toddlers can be some of the most powerful spiritual teachers in our lives. They may not use big words or preach sermons, but they model presence in a way that many of us have forgotten.
I have watched toddlers burst into laughter over a bubble floating in the air, clap with pure delight at a bird in the yard, and cry with their whole hearts when something feels wrong. They live fully in each moment without worrying about the next. Toddlers remind us of God’s design for joy and presence.
As adults, we often live distracted. Our thoughts jump ahead to what needs to be done, what we regret, or what we fear. Toddlers invite us back to the sacredness of now.
When we watch a toddler absorbed in stacking blocks or chasing butterflies, we glimpse a life lived fully present. Their wonder is contagious. Their joy is simple. They remind us that this moment is where God meets us, not in the rush of tomorrow or the weight of yesterday.
Joy is not frivolous. It is part of our faith. Scripture reminds us that “the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). Toddlers embody this truth without even trying. They laugh, explore, and delight in creation as if joy is their natural state — because it is.
Their joy invites us to reframe our own lives. What if we stopped rushing long enough to notice the beauty around us? What if we let joy be strength instead of a luxury?

Here are some of the ways I have learned from watching little ones live:
Pause for one minute. Imagine you are seeing your surroundings through toddler eyes. What would feel new, joyful, or worth celebrating? Let yourself smile at the gift of the present moment.
Toddlers may not know it, but they model spiritual truths we need. They show us how to live fully present, embrace joy, and trust completely. Watching them thrive reminds us of God’s invitation to live the same way.
Toddlers teach us the sacredness of now.
I’m Kelsey. For decades I’ve walked alongside women through chronic pain, burnout, motherhood, faith shifts, and the complicated in-between seasons of life.
What I know for certain: real change doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from surrendering what we’ve been forced to be to what we really want to BECOME. Aligning with what matters most to experience the “more” your soul craves.

The Kelsey Mercer Podcast explores what it actually looks like to live with purpose, resilience, and connection — in every season. No polish, no pretense. Just honest dialogue on faith, health, relationships, and the work of becoming.
