The Healing Power of Play as an Adult

At some point in life, most of us stopped playing. Childhood gave us permission to explore, laugh, and run freely, but adulthood taught us to be serious, efficient, and responsible. While responsibility matters, I have learned that when play disappears, so does an important part of healing.

Play is not just for kids. Adults need play too — laughter, games, movement, and creativity that are not tied to productivity. Play brings joy back into our lives, and joy is medicine.

Why Adults Stop Playing

As adults, we often push play aside because it seems childish or wasteful. We tell ourselves that work, bills, and schedules leave no time for fun. But beneath the surface, many of us are weary. We are stressed, anxious, or disconnected from the joy God created us to live with.

Play is not about ignoring responsibilities. It is about restoring balance. Without play, life becomes heavy. With play, life regains lightness.

The Healing Power of Play

Play activates healing in surprising ways. When you laugh, your body releases endorphins that lower stress and support the immune system. When you move freely, your nervous system resets, and tension eases. When you create or explore, your brain opens to new possibilities and resilience grows.

Play also restores connection. Playing with friends or family strengthens bonds. Play alone invites creativity and curiosity. In both cases, it pulls us out of striving and back into presence.

Rediscovering Joy Through Play

I had to give myself permission to play again. At first, it felt awkward. I was used to being productive, not playful. But the more I allowed play into my days, the more I noticed shifts in my health. Stress lifted. Laughter returned. I felt more alive.

Play reminded me that healing does not always look like work. Sometimes it looks like joy. And joy is a form of strength.

Five Ways to Reintroduce Play as an Adult

Here are practical ways to weave play back into your life:

  1. Move with freedom. Dance in your kitchen, try a new sport, or join a playful fitness class.
  2. Laugh often. Watch a funny movie, share jokes with friends, or spend time with people who make you laugh.
  3. Create without pressure. Paint, write, or build something just for the joy of it.
  4. Play with others. Plan a game night, play cards, or join a recreational league. Connection deepens through fun.
  5. Explore like a child. Go on a nature walk, visit a new place, or try something you’ve never done before.

One Minute Reset

If life feels heavy, pause and ask yourself: “What would bring me joy right now?” Then give yourself permission to do it, even if only for a few minutes.

Living in Joy

Play is not a distraction from healing. Play is healing. It lightens the load, restores connection, and brings your body, mind, and spirit back into balance.

Play is healing at any age.
