When most of us think about healing, we imagine deep work, heavy conversations, and serious practices. Healing is important, but it does not always have to feel heavy. In fact, one of the most overlooked medicines for the soul is laughter.
I used to feel guilty for laughing in seasons of pain, as if joy meant I wasn’t taking my struggles seriously enough. But I’ve learned that laughter is not denial. It is release. Laughter softens the weight of life and creates space for healing to take root.
The Science of Laughter
Science confirms what we already sense: laughter is good for us. When we laugh, our bodies release endorphins that lift mood and reduce stress. Laughter lowers blood pressure, improves circulation, and boosts the immune system.
It also resets the nervous system. If you have been living in tension, even a short burst of laughter can signal to your body that it is safe. That moment of release can begin to unravel anxiety and bring calm.
The Spirit of Laughter
Laughter is not just biological. It is spiritual. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” Laughter connects us to joy, and joy is a fruit of the Spirit.
When we allow ourselves to laugh, we are agreeing with God’s design for wholeness. We are remembering that even in the hardest seasons, His goodness remains. Laughter becomes worship — a way of choosing light in the middle of heaviness.

Why Laughter Belongs in Healing
Healing journeys can feel overwhelming. There are doctor’s visits, counseling sessions, lifestyle changes, and layers of grief or trauma to process. All of those are valid and important. But if we forget to laugh along the way, we risk burning out.
Laughter brings balance. It reminds us we are not only patients or projects, but people with joy woven into our design. It helps us connect with others, creating moments of togetherness that remind us we are not alone.
Five Ways to Invite More Laughter Into Healing
Here are simple ways I’ve brought laughter into my own healing journey:
- Spend time with joyful people. Seek out friends who make you laugh easily.
- Choose playful entertainment. Watch a comedy, read something light, or listen to a funny podcast.
- Practice not taking yourself too seriously. Laugh at your own mistakes and imperfections.
- Bring humor into your family. Play silly games, tell jokes, or recall funny memories together.
- Thank God for joy. Let laughter become a prayer of gratitude for His gift of lightness.
One Minute Reset
When heaviness feels overwhelming, pause and recall a funny moment that always makes you laugh. Close your eyes, replay it in your mind, and let yourself smile. Notice how your body softens when joy returns.
Sacred Healing Through Laughter
Laughter is not the opposite of healing. It is part of healing. It lightens what feels heavy, restores connection, and reminds us of the goodness of God even in hard times.
Laughter is sacred healing. Let it have a place in your journey.
